Hybrid open access combines both traditional subscription-based publishing and open access. In this model, some articles are freely accessible to the public (open access), while others require a subscription or payment to access. Typically, authors or institutions pay article processing charges (APCs) to make specific articles open access within a subscription-based journal.

Hybrid open access provides a transitional approach for journals to gradually adopt open access while maintaining their existing subscription models. However, critics argue that this model can lead to double-dipping, where institutions pay for both subscriptions and APCs.
